Apple moved sleep tracking into the Health app, not Clock. Tap Browse at the bottom, then Sleep. If you have never set it up, you will see 'Set Up Sleep.' If you already have a schedule, tap 'Full Schedule & Options' to edit days, times, or delete the schedule entirely. You can also access shortcuts through the Sleep focus in Settings > Focus.
During setup, drag the bed and wake icons to your preferred times. You can set different schedules for different days—tap 'Add Schedule' to create variations like earlier weekdays and later weekends. Each schedule needs its own alarm sound; the default is 'Early Riser,' but you can change it to something gentler or your own audio file.
Wind Down starts 15–60 minutes before your scheduled bedtime. It automatically enables Sleep Focus, which silences notifications and can dim your lock screen or trigger a shortcuts automation. To customize what Sleep Focus blocks, go to Settings > Focus > Sleep > Options. You can allow calls from specific contacts or repeated calls to break through.
If you prefer manual tracking, disable 'Sleep Schedule' in Health > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options, but keep 'Track Sleep with Apple Watch' on. The phone will still record sleep when you wear your watch, just without alarms or Wind Down automation. You may also use third-party apps like AutoSleep or Pillow; data from these can write to Health if you grant permission.
If your alarm does not sound, check that Sleep Schedule is toggled on for that day and that your volume is up—Sleep alarms use the ringer volume, not media volume. If Wind Down starts at the wrong time, verify your time zone in Settings > General > Date & Time. For inconsistent tracking, ensure your watch is charged and worn with a snug fit.
Three ways to handle sleep on iPhone, depending on how much structure you want.
| Approach | Best for | What it asks of you |
|---|---|---|
| Full Sleep Schedule (Health app) | People who want automated Wind Down, Sleep Focus, and consistent alarms | 10 minutes to set up; daily adherence to schedule |
| Manual tracking only | People with irregular hours who still want sleep data | No schedule maintenance; requires checking data manually |
| Third-party sleep apps | People wanting detailed analytics or snore detection | App setup plus granting Health data permissions |
| Clock app alarms only | People who want simple alarms without sleep tracking | Minimal; set alarms as needed |
Apple moved sleep management to the Health app in iOS 14. The Clock app now only shows alarms you create manually. Your Sleep Schedule alarms appear in Health > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options.
Yes. In Health > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options, tap 'Add Schedule' to create multiple schedules with different bedtimes and wake times for specific days of the week.
Yes for alarms and Wind Down. Sleep stage tracking requires an Apple Watch Series 3 or later. Without a watch, the iPhone estimates time in bed based on phone usage.
In Health > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options, toggle off 'Sleep Schedule.' Your existing schedules are saved but inactive until you toggle it back on.
